Overview

Malaysia is becoming a hub for sports development and innovation in Southeast Asia, hosting major events such as the SEA games, the MotoGP, and the largest marathon race event in the southern hemisphere, and in the past has welcomed the Commonwealth Games and the Formula One Grand Prix, which is scheduled to return in 2026. The most popular sports of football and badminton inspire the nation to turn out or tune-in in droves, and drives the sales of merchandise and sports equipment.

Malaysia’s sport industry is on a growth trajectory that encompasses various sectors, such as:

  • Sports governance including the safety in sports for women and girls

  • Improved athlete training and development including in health and nutrition,

  •  Facilities management

  • Event management and sponsorship

  • Female representation in sport

The program is designed to provide a comparison and a contrast to other sports-mad nations, and addresses the localized challenges that underscore sports management and growth such as the tropical climate, access to sport in schools, sponsorship and cultural issues that can restrict the involvement of women and girls.

Through this program, students will have the opportunity to speak with experts and practitioners in the field, to visit sport facilities and event managers, meet with government officials and to network and collaborate with local and international stakeholders.
