  • 1. What is the application process?

    • Submit application documents

    • Use an email address that you frequently use. Many universities prefer you to use your official university email.

    • Please add TGS to your “safe senders” list and remember to check regularly.

    2. What happens after my Zoom interview with TGS?

    • The internship manager will send out your application to the host companies you have agreed to consider for them to review your application. Once the company shows interest, she will then organise a further interview for you with the host company. This process can take from 4 to 6 weeks.

    3. What do I need to do after my Zoom interview with TGS?

    • Prepare yourself for your interview with your host company by doing your research on the potential host company. Ensure that you check your emails daily and stay in contact with the Internship Manager in case she needs to reach you urgently. Make sure TGS has your WhatsApp number to speed up the process.

    4. Do I get a confirmation letter?

    • TGS will receive a confirmation letter from your host company which will be sent to you for your signature. Some universities may also have a confirmation document that they expect host companies to complete. The confirmation letter may contain information about location, working hours, dress code, expectations, name of supervisor or mentor, whether they provide a computer, or you need to bring your own, and issues such as confidentiality.

    5. Do I have to sign an agreement with the host company?

    • Some companies will ask their interns to sign a workplace agreement, which might be about confidentiality, workplace culture, internship expectations, etc.

    6. How will I know how to prepare for the experience?

    • Your university will organise a pre-departure session for you often with the presence of TGS via Zoom. TGS will provide pre-departure information via email in the weeks leading up to the program commencing, and you will have access to this via the TGS Student Support Site.

  • 1. What do I need to do before my Zoom interview with The Global Student?

    • Take a look at the internship site and consider the kinds of options available. Remember, not all hosts listed will be prepared to take interns at a particular time, as they may already have allocated spaces to other interns, or not have enough work or staff during your program, but we are always keen to find new hosts similar to the one you might be looking at.

    2. How long is my interview?

    • Your Zoom interview session will be kept to 15 minutes and is used to focus on the internship experience. Further information about Kuala Lumpur and the program will be forwarded once your position is confirmed.

    3. What time is my interview with the Host Company?

    • Interviews are held on Mondays to Fridays from 9 am to 5 pm Malaysian time and will be arranged around your study schedule.

    4. What should I say during my interview with Host Company?

    • The interview is similar to any job interview, the objective being to understand what kind of work or project they are offering. Ensure you have a list of questions prepared for the host company that you would like to know so that you are clear about whether this experience is for you, or not.

  • 1. Where will I stay?

    • You will be accommodated in a co-living place with your own room and shared communal living and recreation spaces.

    2. What happens when I arrive?

    • In the lead-up to the program, TGS will provide information about getting from the airport and check-in at your accommodation. Check-in is usually 3 pm but if you arrive earlier, you may leave your bags with the concierge and explore the area. The Internship Manager will be in touch to ensure you arrive in time for orientation.

    • You must attend the compulsory Orientation program that takes place over the weekend and includes a “Race around Kuala Lumpur” (or whichever city is your destination) and a test run to your workplace.

    • For remote programs, your orientation will take place via Zoom with a link that TGS will provide. There will also be a Kenali Malaysia Challenge (a fun familiarisation exercise) for you to complete, the instructions will be given to you on the day of your orientation.

    3. Do I require a visa?

    • Australian passport holders do not require a visa, entering Malaysia on a social visit pass for up to 90 days. https://malaysia.highcommission.gov.au/klpr/new_colombo_plan.html

    • Non-Australian passport holders may require a visa and need to check this with the Malaysian Consulate in Canberra. TGS can provide the necessary confirmation letter to facilitate this.

    • Students traveling to Vietnam will require a visa which can be applied for online and more detailed information can be provided upon application. This can regularly change.

  • 1. What is my daily attire?

    • Each host will provide information about the dress code prior to your departure, but for most Malaysian companies it will be business attire or smart casual. Information about the dress code is located in the TGS Internship Support Site which you will receive access to upon confirmation of your internship.

    • For remote internships, you are required to look smart and neat during video meetings with your host or supervisor and will usually need to have your camera on.

    2. Do I need my laptop?

    • This depends on the company and its resources and will be advised during the confirmation process.

    • Remote working internships will require a laptop in good working condition and also a reliable internet connection.

    3. What is a remote working procedure?

    • The standard operating procedure of each company is different. It is important to find out in advance how a company’s SOP works. For a remote working internship, it is important to:

      - Have all forms of communication channels available during your working hours.

      - Schedule frequent video meetings for discussion on tasks or projects.

      - Understanding and learning online tools provided by the company.

      - Reporting and updating the supervisor on task or project status.

    4. Will I have an induction before I start work?

    • Yes, your host company will provide an induction, and these vary from informal to very formal depending on the host company. At the least, it will be welcome to the company, meet the relevant team members, and gain an overview of the project or the duties you will undertake.

    2. What does the program cost cover?

    • TGS is a full-service delivery partner to many universities that prides itself on providing a fun, safe and life-changing learning abroad experience. The program includes:

      • Host matching and general liaison between university/student and hosts.

      • Pre-departure information and preparation for arrival.

      • Accommodation in single occupancy rooms, usually in 2-3br Apartments or communal living spaces.

      • Orientation to the city and culture upon arrival.

      • A day trip to Melaka or other local sites of interest.

      • Welcome and farewell functions, welcome kit.

      • Regular follow-up and ongoing support throughout the program.

      • Networking events with business chambers or professional organizations.

      • 24-hour emergency hotline during the program.

    3. The cost does NOT cover:

    • Meals except were indicated in the program (welcome and farewell)

    • Transport to your internship site

    • Airfares

    • Passports

    • Note: students should budget approximately $30-40 per day for basic meals and transport. (Does not include alcohol)
