Music

The rich and diverse culture of Malaysia really lends itself to a study tour in music and performance. Kuala Lumpur has a thriving music scene ranging from jazz, rock and pop through to classical and the Malaysian Philharmonic. Visitors can experience a broad range of heritage music and performance, from the ancient Chinese art of Teow Chew puppets and Chinese Opera, the traditional “Wayang Kulit” shadow puppets, the indigenous music of Borneo featuring instruments such as the sape, and the traditional ensemble music of the Javanese, the Gamelan made up predominantly of percussive instruments. Site visits can include recording studios and production houses, university music programs and the National Academy of Cultural and Heritage Arts, and performing arts groups such as Hands Percussion, an explosive and loud traditional drumming group.
