International School Program

Duration: 4 weeks (minimum)

Location: Kuala Lumpur

This program initially began with Latrobe University partnering with a Malaysian university Education Faculty, where Latrobe PST’s where matched with a local PST to team teach in an international school setting.

When the GEP began in 2013, there were few international schools and these were not open to Malaysian children, so the environment was more like a private school in Australia. Today Malaysia is home to no less than 120 international schools that serve the emergent middle and upper classes, which means a more culturally localized international environment, providing the inter-cultural experience desired by the university.

In this program, Australian PST’s are placed in International Schools for 4 weeks, where they are supervised by an appropriately qualified teacher. In this model, an academic staff member may join the program in the final week to observe teaching practice, but otherwise supervision is done remotely, as the pedagogical practice is more familiar.

This model is attractive to international schools who are often seeking qualified staff, and with language and culture less challenging, they may provide an option for independent, mature age, final year or M Teach students.
