This program provides an introduction to Communication Management in Asia, with students gaining an understanding of the similarities and differences to the PR and Journalism industry in Australia, with a focus on digital technology.
Industry visits include the Department of Information within the Ministry of Information, Communication and Culture to hear about Malaysia’s Communications policy; an international PR company such as Hill & Knowlton where they are given a briefing by a senior partner; a visit to Malaysia’s major English language news portal Malaysiakini, where they hear from one of the founders about the challenges of journalism in Malaysia, and local NGO’s who provide background into the importance of social media as a communication tool in Asia.
Previous groups have also worked with Taylors University students on real life PR campaigns that they had been working together on-line with prior to departure. This provides students with exposure not only to the industry, but engagement with local university students who act as buddies outside of school hours.
Students are exposed to a range of communication channels and organisations that provide a comparison and contrast to the workplace in Australia, and some programs have included a short work placement that has provided a wider view.
“Thank you so much Jan and Teena. We have just returned from our amazing two-week Study Tour to KL and Singapore and I simply can’t imagine organising the tour without your expertise and back up. Learning in a multicultural environment offers different perspectives and rich opportunities for engagement and our students have certainly been offered a once-in-a-lifetime experience with thanks to your involvement. Your quick understanding or our needs, faultless organisation, great ideas and keen attention to all the details really made the difference. On behalf of the students, please accept our grateful appreciation…. we’ll be back!!”
