September 2017 at The Global Student

Message from the Director

What a crazy month, with only one full working week due to the multitude of Malaysian public holidays! Ongoing technical issues have resulted in a complete migration of our website and email to a new host, causing disruption again to our communication systems, and a lot of stress and frustration. I did manage a short break which helped to distance myself from the mayhem for a couple of days, in preparation for my trip back home and to the AIEC conference. I hope to see many of you there.

Some good news was the success of some of our partners in obtaining NCP funding for particular projects, but also three different consortia including the Global Education Practicum, which received funding for three years. So exciting to have such a well-established program given the support to expand and build upon new models of program delivery, and potential new destinations.

We also welcomed a new group of Maquarie PACE students to Sabah, where they are undertaking projects with PACOS Trust – the Council for Indigenous Peoples in Sabah. Otherwise the team are in preparation mode for the Deakin Team Internship students who arrive to undertake their group projects soon, and the Latrobe pre-service teachers who undertake their team–teaching with Taylors University students. We are also deep in development for the new programs for Vietnam and Thailand for 2018, while chasing up leads from Myanmar.

TGS is also looking for a couple of interns over the Aussie summer, either local Malaysian or Aussies, for business administration and program assistance, and also for some media content creation. If you have students looking for some fun over the long break, please encourage them to get in touch.

And of course to the most important matter – GO TIGES!!

New Internship Partner: AirAsia!!!

After some very productive meetings over the last few weeks, stemming from a chance encounter with Mr Air Asia himself, Tony Fernandes, we are over the moon to announce that soon we will be able to place interns with one of Asia's biggest Airlines! This is a huge coup for us here at The Global Student and one that we are very excited to begin. Air Asia are keen to partner with TGS in sourcing final year interns from ASEAN countries initially.  We would like to hear from Careers Counsellors, especially those that assist international students find work back home.

New Internship Experiences

It's only natural for students to want to complete their Internships at 'Big Name' companies as a way of really adding some value to their ever growing CV. However, we are often aware that it is smaller, lesser known companies that really provide students with something that others can't. EXPERIENCES.
When we are assessing new host companies we always ask, "What can the intern expect to 'experience' at your firm?' Field trips? Site visits? Meetings with government heads? Students are always encouraged by TGS to ensue that they make the most of their Internship, by doing much more than mundaine tasks at a desk. Below are some of our great current opportunities that students can be a part of this summer!
