Message from the Director
November. What can I say? Is it really 12 months since our last Deakin Enviro Study Your, which usually marks the beginning of our summer programs? Yes, another year has sped by and we have welcomed Dr John White and his adventurous crew once again, as they explore the wilds of Malaysian Borneo, seeking understanding of conservation and environmental sustainability in a region full of oil palm, logging of forests and building of mega dams! Through engagement with National Parks programs and indigenous tribes, they will gain an understanding of the fragility of the eco-system and the need for a balance in human-wildlife interaction.
This month we also welcomed Deakin’s Malaysian Team Internship program with groups working in companies on discrete projects that benefit their hosts. This was the twelfth iteration of this program, testament to the fact that continuity of a program builds engagement with partners, who in turn refer their colleagues in other companies.
The other program we welcomed for the third time was the Latrobe CIPP (Collaborative International Paired Placement) program for pre-service teachers, who team teach in an international school with a PST from Taylors College Malaysia. This program will become part of the Global Education Practicum in 2018 under the NCP Consortia funding.
And finally this weekend we welcome the first of our internship cohort - this week from The University of Melbourne, Deakin, and Latrobe. We will be kept busy with orientations, language and culture programs, students Race Around KL and doing practice runs to their workplaces. This marks the beginning of three months of providing experiences that we hope will add to the students personal growth and employability!
So as Spring turns into Summer downunder, and you begin to wind down for the holidays, think of us all at TGS working hard to provide challenging yet rewarding experiences for students.
Intern Reflection - Shaun Cross
My name is Shaun Cross, I took an internship position through The Global Student over a 6-week period in June/July.
I was offered a position at TAPiO Management Advisory, which is a consulting company that’s main focus is partnering multinational companies with local Malaysian companies. It was such a great learning experience to be able to work on real life projects and get a good perspective on what it’s like to be out in the workforce. It was a little bit scary going in the sense that I had no idea what kind of work I would be doing, in a country whose first language isn’t English, but on arrival I was welcomed by the staff of The Global Student who were there for any worries we might have had. The people at my workplace were equally as welcoming and friendly, and there were also few other interns at my work which made it a lot easier for me to settle in as well.
Aside from work, The Global Student also organised for us to see a few of the sights around Malaysia, as well as a networking evening with the Malaysian-Australian Business Council.
Overall my internship experience was an amazing 6 weeks. I got to immerse myself in a completely different culture, learning the local customs and tucking into the local cuisines. At the same time I gained valuable work experience, learning things you are never taught at university and expanding my network of contacts.
Third Blog Post
We are always telling students to live in the moment during placement, but many struggle to keep their heads off their phones and Social Media to truly appreciate what is going on around them. In this Blog we explore this and compare it to the disconnect felt by Jan and her exchange group in 1995. Read more
